Any suggestions for what to do after a mastectomy?

I am writing on behalf of a relative. She had one breast removed last October but has not needed any further follow up treatment. I was cross that she never sought a second opinion prior to surgery, which seemed to be rushed through. She is a big girl 32 H sized bra and is now terribly lop sided. She wants to know is there a possibility of having breast reconstruction, without having to have tissue removed from another part of her body? The only option she was given was to have the muscle and tissue from her back dragged around to the front. She says rather than have another part of her body disfigured in this procedure, she would prefer to have her other breast also removed to resolve the lop sided problem. Is this an option too? I was shocked to see the aftermath of her surgery. It looks disgusting, as if she has literally been butchered with a meat cleaver. There is no finesse about the surgeon's work and I have seen other amputation scars which are nothing like this. The operation was not carried out at a cancer specialist hospital, but a general cottage hospital. She seems to be slipping into depression now. The breast cancer nurses have not been very sympathetic so please do not suggest speaking with them. All help and suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanking you in anticipation Best wishes Elaine

Breast reconstruction can be carried out using an expandable implant if the tissues of the chest wall are good. It is difficult to reconstruct a large breast and it might be possible to carry out reconstruction with reduction of her normal side. She should seek a referral to a local plastic surgical unit for advice.

there are other options which may apply. The gold standard is to transfer tissue from your abdomen(tummy) to reconstruct a new breast and also get the other side to match. If this does not appeal then insertion of a tissue expander under the skin and gradually stretching the skin and finally replacing the expander with an implant may be another option. We can also reduce the other side to match.
