For those suffering from pigmentation problems, an even-toned complexion can be a distant dream. They occur because the body either produces too much melanin (hyperpigmentation) or too little (hypopigmentation).
A related condition is melasma or the ‘mask of pregnancy’ as pregnancy can cause hormones to overproduce melanin and create a dark mask-like discoloured pigmentation that covers the cheeks and bridge of the nose. Go to melasma treatments to find out more.
Pigmentation: Am I suitable?
A qualified and experienced practitioner will need to determine the exact nature of the pigmentation problem and what is its cause before determining which is the best treatment to deal with it.
Pigmentation: What do I have to do to prepare?
Sunsreen is a must; it’s melanin which protects the body from damaging ultraviolet light which is why those with both hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation problems should take extra care to protect their skin from the sun’s rays.
Pigmentation: What’s the treatment like?
Hyperpigmentation appears as brownish patches on the skin as the patient ages and suffers from years of sun damage. Pigmentation treatments are as follows (click on the individual treatments for more information):
Cosmeceuticals; all the major cosmeceuticals brands carry products that aim to improve hyperpigmentation. Look for products containing alpha and beta hydroxyl acids, yeast extract and vitamin C, among others.
Prescription skin creams; these must be prescribed by a doctor. Hydroquinone is a skin bleaching agent that can reduce the appearance of discoloured skin by blocking melanin. The potential side effects can include skin irritation, permanent hypopigmentation and possibly even increased hyperpigmentation if you do not follow the advice of your practitioner carefully.
Lumixyl; an alternative to hydroquinone, Lumixyl is a synthetic peptide that lightens dark spots, helps with melasma, sun damage and uneven pigmentation. It is not a prescription drug but is sold by aesthetic practitioners as you should have a thorough skin consultation before embarking on treatment.
Skin peels (or chemical peels); can help improve tone by softening the skin and removing the top layer.
Cell therapy; (Recell and Vavelta) this process uses the patient’s own skin cells to repair and rejuvenate the skin.
Laser skin rejuvenation; fractional laser treatments can reduce pores, tighten skin, improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles and, more importantly, remove sun damage and pigmentation.
Pigmentation: What will it cost me?
