Microdermabrasion is also known as mechanical exfoliation or micro-resurfacing. It exfoliates the top layer of the skin to produce a more even tone and texture and to remove the first signs of ageing.

When we are young, our skin renews itself regularly, but in our thirties and forties that slows right down. Exfoliation of the dead skin cells can reveal a more glowing complexion.

Mircodermabrasion: Am I suitable?

If your complexion is looking dull or you are starting to see the first signs of ageing then a course of microdermabrasion could be the answer. It can also help with acne scarring and sun damage. This is a great entry-level procedure for women who want to look after their skin.

Microdermabrasion is a very safe and popular treatment and it is suitable for most people. You shouldn’t have microdermabrasion if you have active cold sores, active acne, rosacea and certain skin conditions such as psoriasis or exzema.

Microdermabrasion: What do I have to do to prepare?

There is no preparation necessary with this procedure.

Microdermabrasion: What’s the treatment like?

The treatment usually takes about 30 minutes. A course of treatments is usually recommended to get the best results and you should leave weekly to fortnightly intervals between each treatment for optimum skin health.

There are many different microdermabrasion systems; some use abrasive paddles or crystals to exfoliate the surface, usually with a suction hand piece to remove the dead skin layer. Others incorporate exfoliating creams.

Microdermabrasion: What about after?

There may be some redness and swelling but this is temporary. If a suction device is used then there may be some bruising. Your practitioner will usually recommend you wear a high factor sunscreen as the skin is more sensitive.

Microdermabrasion: Are there any risks or side effects?

There aren’t any long-term side effects associated with microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion: What will it cost me?

Usually costs from £50 to £100 but a course of treatments is recommended.
